I
Want My Gay TV
by
Gabrielle
As
you may have noticed from this web site, Xena and I are HUGE
entertainment consumers. We love everything from television,
movies, books, music, comedy, plays, etc. Xena busts hump for
www.dcdykes.com (THANK YOU XENA!!!!!!!) every month to find
the lesbian scraps on television in order for us to properly
set our VCRs. Instead of only searching through 500 digital
channels looking for some needles in a haystack, I would desperately
like to have a network set up for those interested in the LGBT
community. Why should that be any different than other cable
channels that have niche focuses such as CSPAN, ESPN, CourtTV,
The Food Network, Oxygen, etc?
While
on a recent trip to Toronto, Canada, Xena and I had the opportunity
to visit the offices of PrideVision
TV. They are located on Church Street which is the heart
of Toronto's gay ghetto. Xena and I were amazed by the entire
concept of 24 hours by 7 days channel consisting of people like
us on television. The people who worked at Pridevison Television
graciously took the time to answer all sorts of questions for
us, even after they realized we had no way of subscribing to
this new found gem from Washington D.C. We were thrilled to
hear that the network has been launched into the many arms of
an appreciative audience. We wish them continued success!!!!!!
As
you may have read in the Latest
News section, MTV and Showtime are considering starting
a cable channel for the United States similar to Pridevision
Television. It is about damn time for this country to set up
a cable channel for us!! Just like the traditional broadcast
networks, I would like to see a cable channel that addresses
news, entertainment, sports, soap operas, dramas, documentaries,
talk shows, etc. that relate to our community. Having grown
up during a time where I had to shout to my cable company that
"I want my MTV," I realize it is important that we
communicate the same message today. If you feel as strongly
as I do about advocating a national cable network like this,
I encourage you to write to both MTV and Showtime (see addresses
at the bottom of this page) to let them know that if they start
it you will subscribe. I believe that they would be terrific
backers of this type of network since they are quite comfortable
with queer programming.
