The
Washington Mystics 2002 Draft
by
Gabrielle
Xena and
I decided to take Friday, April 19th off from work to attend the
2002 Washington Mystics Draft Party at the ESPN
Zone. The joint was packed and the anticipation was high.
Would my beloved Mystics (remember Xena worships the NY Liberty)
make yet another bonehead decision?
The
Washington Mystics have some of the most rabid fans in the WNBA.
Three attendance awards in 4 years clearly speaks for itself.
How have the fans been rewarded for their support? I believe we
have received what could best be described as BUPCUS, ZERO, NADA,
and ZILCH. Between poor coaching (Nancy?, Tom?), poor drafting
(Coco we love you but you need to Gogo), and the worst waste of
talent to hit the WNBA (Chamique, Pat is watching. If you don't
get your act together and put your spoiled attitude away this
year YOU WILL BE TRADED!!!!!!!!!!) we have suffered.

However,
the winds of change are blowing. The Washington Mystics have hired
winners in new head coach Marianne
Stanley and new "player personnel consultant"
(aka General Manager) in Pat
Summitt. Armed with the number 3 and 4 picks in the first
round of this year's draft and new competent leadership, Stacey
Dales-Schuman (University of Oklahoma and 2000 Canadian Olympic
Basketball Team Member) and Aisha Jones (University of Connecticut)
were selected as new acquisitions that will make an immediate
impact on a team that performed an impressive Keystone Cops impersonation
last summer. These new women are winners. Oklahoma would have
won the NCAA Women's Basketball tournament this past year if Connecticut
had not put together the best team in the history of college basketball.
This
summer's season at the MCI Center should be a fantastic way to
celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Mystics. As mentioned above
the new faces in management and player personal should provide
Mystics fans with high level basketball that is exciting to watch.
One other big thing that is happening this summer is the fact
that the 2002
WNBA All-Star game will played in Washington. As all of
the out-of-town dykes visit DC for this event, let's make sure
we let them know what the top WNBA fans are really like. See you
at the games this summer.
