Aimee
and Jaguar - (1999) - Who here loves to read lesbian movies?
If you can handle the whole foreign film set in World War
II aspect of the movie, you are in for a treat. The interesting
thing about this movie is that it is a true story about two
women, one Jewish and one was German, who fell in love with
each other and had a relationship against all odds. While
I recommend it, it is not for the by any means light. Make
sure you have a few tissues on you. Visit one of the Unofficial
Websites - this one has information on the actual
women this film is about. Also check out the Official
Website. (G) |

 Alles
Wird Gut- Everything Will Be Fine - (1998)
- Directed by Angelina Maccarone with screenplay by Fatima
El-Tayeb "Alles Wird Gut" (Everything Will Be Fine)
an internationally award winning film, and is one gem of a
movie that worthy of accolades, yet for the most part is unheard
of in the United States. A
German movie that follows the exploits of Nabou, an afro German
free spirited lesbian who is unceremonously dumped by her
lover, the beautiful blue haired "disco Barbie"
Katja. Nabou is not about to give up so easily on the relationship
though, and obsessively stakes out the building where her
Katja lives... Read

Bar
Girls - (1994) - This film offer's something for every
lesbian. It is about the life and loves of some lesbian's
hanging out at a local bar. Very diverse characters offers
something for everyone. (X) |

| Better
Than Chocolate - (1999) - We both really liked this
one. Cute story, great music and wild sets and some steamy
sex scenes all help to make this a great movie. Maggie is
a clerk in a lesbian bookstore who meets Kim, a carefree
dyke who moves around from place to place in her van. The
attraction is immediate for both Kim and Maggie, but Maggie's
life gets turned upside down when she finds out her Mom
is getting a divorce and coming for a visit. The rest of
the cast is interesting and keeps the movie just as exciting.
This is another one worth checking out. Great date movie.

| Bound
- (1996) - Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon together! What
more could you want? Well, you do get a really cool suspense
story with a surprise ending in this mob type of thriller.
The sex scenes are alone worth watching but the camera angels
and music score are also something else. There are a few
moments that might turn your stomach is you can't stand
the sight of blood. Just look away...but not for too long.
It is a must own for your movie collection. (G)

Boys
Don't Cry - (1999) - Kimberly Peirce directs Hillary Swank
(to an Oscar for best actress) and Chloe Sevigny (to an Oscar
nomination for best supporting actress) in this disturbing
story based on real-life people and events. This is the story
of Brandon Teena, a young man in rural Nebraska looking for
acceptance and a girl with which to spend his life. The only
problem is that Brandon is actually Tina Brandon, and it is
an understatement to say that the men in his life are NOT
happy when they learn the truth about Brandon's biological
gender. THIS IS A DIFFICULT MOVIE ON MANY LEVELS!! However
with that warning in mind, it is clearly one of the most gripping
movies I have ever seen. Visit the Official
Website. (G) |

Boys
On The Side - (1995) - Mary Louise Parker, Whoopie Goldberg
& Drew Barymore are wonderful as three women traveling
across the country. They each have their own reason for wanting
to take this trip... reliving memories, pursuing a career,
escaping a murder...typical stuff. Add in cameo's from The
Indigo Girls and a Melissa Etheridge closing song and you
have a great collection of talent in this one. Keep the Kleenex
handy though. You will need it. (X) |

| But
I'm A Cheerleader - (1999) - Young cheerleader doesn't
think she is gay, but everyone around her does. When her
parents send her to "True Directions", a place
where people can learn to be straight, she learns more then
she thought she would. This is a cute movie and has a some
real funny moments. Visit the Official

Chasing
Amy - This movie is part of the "New Jersey Trilogy"
by Kevin Smith. Be forewarned, Kevin Smith's writing and the
actors he casts in his movies are not for everyone. This film
explores the insecurities all people have whether gay or straight.
The two lead characters are comic book writers, one straight
male and one lesbian, who end up in a relationship together.
Many issues about relationships, sexual orientation, and how
our pasts impact our present are explored. What I liked about
the movie when I first saw it was Amy's honest dialogue about
her sexuality. How do you explain why and how you are a lesbian
to someone who is not? Can you be attracted to a man if you
identify as a lesbian? I am not sure I am a Kevin Smith fan,
though I am glad I have watched his movies. Actually, I am
NOT a Ben Affleck fan and he has the lead male role in Chasing
Amy. The fact that Joey Lauren Adams is easy on the eyes and
gives a solid performance in the movie helped deflect my distaste
for Ben. This is a movie that should be able to spark good
dialogue with your date or partner, but certainly not a movie
you are going to watch for lesbian sex scenes. (G) |

| Claire
of The Moon - (1992) - Not sure what to say about this
one. It's an interesting movie. A little like "Desert
Hearts" in the sense that it's not as fast paced or
interesting as some of the lesbian movies more recently.

| Chutney
Popcorn - (1999) - Chutney Popcorn is filled with characters
struggling to find the balance between Indian traditions
and New York City life in the 1990's. Let me just get this
out of the way - JILL HENNESSEY IS HOT IN THIS MOVIE!! (I
feel much better for having shared that, now on with the
review:) The story revolves around two sisters, Sarita (the
perfect one) and Reena (the lesbian one), trying to find
their place in the world and with their mother. While Reena
always feels as if she falls short in the eyes of her family
due to her lifestyle, it turns out she can do the one thing
that married Sarita can not - get pregnant! Reena's obsession
to become pregnant significantly impacts everyone in her
life, including her girlfriend. At first I was worried it
may have cultural references I could not relate to or understand,
but you will find that the dialogue between Reena and her
lesbian friends produces some of the observations and one-liners
about lesbian life on film. This humorous, yet poignant
movie is a can't miss. Visit the Official
Website. (G)

Common
Ground - (2000) - "This movie contains three short
stories dealing with the theme of homosexuality. In "A
Friend of Dorothy" written by Paula Vogel, a woman (Brittany
Murphy) joins the Navy during the 1950's and discovers lesbianism.
In "Mr. Roberts", written by Terrence McNally, a
teacher (Steven Weber) in a 1970's classroom struggles with
his closeted gay status. Finally in "Amos and Andy",
a father (Edward Asner) wrestles with his own emotional acceptance
of a present day wedding between his son (James Le Gros) and
another man." Watch for Thea Gill (Lindsay of "Queer
As Folk") in the third segment. This was directed by
Donna Deitch, who also directed "Desert Hearts".(X) |
 |
Desert
Hearts - (1985) - Okay, this isn't the best lesbian movie
ever made but it is one worth seeing if for no other reason
then to see what lesbian movies were like before "Bound".
Patricia Charbonneau is really cute as a young dyke who falls
for a woman (Helen Shaver), who is waiting for a divorce Reno
in the late 50's. (X) |
 |
| Gia
- (1998) - Not technically a "lesbian" movie,
it's become a favorite over the years. Gia was a supermodel
in every sense of the word. She gets discovered and hit's
the NY fashion scene by storm. Her life and love's are something
that was out of control from the beginning. It's a very
sad story, but Angelina Jolie is amazing and very believable
in the starting role. (G)

 |
| Go
Fish - (1994) - This look into the lives of a group
of young lesbians living in Chicago won a number of awards
after it's release in 1994. It's a standard love story about
a young lesbian looking for the right person in a flood
of lesbians. She finds her when she least expects it. It's
a cute love story and pretty fun to watch. It's an independent
film and does not have the same style as a major motion
picture, but it's worth viewing. (X)

Heavenly
Creatures - (1994) - Welcome to the movie Kate Winslet
does not want you to see
This movie is based on the
true story of two outcast young girls from New Zealand whose
intense bond becomes increasingly obsessive. When one of the
girl's mothers feels that their relationship has gone too
far and tries to separate them, murder ensues. While this
movie can be disturbing, Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey
(But I'm a Cheerleader) do an amazing job portraying the relationship
and love story of these two young girls. One side note, the
costumes are done by the same team as Xena: Warrior Princess
(hey, how many great costume folks live in New Zealand?).

High
Art - (1998) - Brat Pack alumna Ally Sheedy plays Lucy,
a gritty talented photographer lost in her addiction to heroin.
Radha Mitchell stars as Syd, a young editor at a snobby magazine
who just might get a career break if she can convince Lucy
to produce a photo spread for the magazine. Lucy and Syd develop
a powerful attraction to each other even though they are both
in relationships (Lucy with her German girlfriend and Syd
with her square boyfriend). Lesbianism is a powerful theme
in the movie but not the overriding driving force. The movie
deals with relationships, addictions, careers, and what exactly
is high art. (G) |
 |
| The
Hunger - (1983) - Susan Sarandon & Catherine Deneuve
are incredibly sexy in this vampire thriller. Miriam (Deneuve)
is an Egyptian vampire subsists upon the blood of her lovers.
In return the men and women become her lovers and are not
supposed to age. Sarah (Sarandon), is a doctor trying to
find the answer to aging who becomes intrigued by Miriam
and ends up as one of her "victim's". Okay, this
might not be the best vampire story out there, but the lesbian
love scene between Sarandon and Deneuve is worth watching
this movie. This film is available on VHS, but not yet on
DVD.

If
These Walls Could Talk 2 - (2000) - Great cast in three
different stories about lesbians who have all lived in the
same house at different times. Vanessa Redgrave gives an award
winning performance as a older lesbian who must deal with
the loose of her longtime partner, when nobody can know they
were a "couple". You better have the Kleenex handy
when you watch this one. The second installment stars Chloe
Sevigny and Michelle Williams who make a cute couple in a
story that deals with butch/femme. Finally, Ellen DeGeneres
and Sharon Stone are great as a couple trying to have a baby.
Be ready for a mix of emotions watching this one. (X) |

The

funny and fast-paced climax is worth watching. Visit the Unofficial

Kissing
Jessica Stein - (2002) - I went to see a movie recently
and a movie trailer for this ran. It looks great!!!!! Jessica
Stein has done all that she can to find Mr. Right. After turning
over every rock, she thinks she might be looking in the wrong
place. This movie looks at what happens when looking for Mr.
turns into finding Ms. I will be the first one in line to
see this based on the trailer. Due in theater's on March 15th
of 2002. Visit the Official
Website or a very good Unofficial
site. You can also read Gabrielle's
review. (G) |

Personal
Best - (1982) - Thank God for cable. Cable was new in
our house when HBO originally began airing this movie. Personal
Best was the first movie I saw that involved any type of lesbian
relationship and I am quite sure I did not understand all
of it when I first saw it. I now realize what an important
break through to have a lesbian themed movie playing in mainstream
theaters it must have been in the early 1980s. Personal Best
may appear dated now, but it is an interesting portrayal of
world class Olympic preparation and how one evolves as a person
in that environment. Side note, Mariel Hemingway and Patrice
Donnelly are amazing in this movie. (G) |

Relax...It's
Just Sex - (1998) - Jennifer Tilly - ENOUGH SAID!!!!!!
While she is not reprising her Violet role from "Bound"
(she is a fag hag in this movie), Lori Petty fans will be
thrilled to see that she takes off her "Free Willy"
wet suit for some other wet things
This is a solid movie
about the lives of friends with various sexual backgrounds
and identities. Relax...just try it. (G) |
 |
The
Sex Monster - (1999) - Hilarious comedy staring Mariel
Hemingway (she still looks great all of these years after
Personal Best) and Mike Binder. The story focuses on a married
couple who have been together for several years. The husband
thinks that a great way to spice up the relationship would
be for his wife to experience a three-way with him and another
woman. Of course in every man's fantasy, the women are there
to satisfy the sexual desires of him. This movie takes a look
at what happens when a woman "breaks the dam" and
experiences "the home court advantage." I laughed
out loud many times. While the movie does not actually graphically
show the sex, there is no doubt that the women in this movie
know how to please each other better than the men. Visit the
Official
Website. (G) |

Sporty
Girls - Georgia Ragsdale is hilarious in this 45 minute
video that captures a night with the standup comedienne in
front of a Women's Basketball Final Four crowd in Saint Louis.
Georgia's physical comedy coupled with her smart, perceptive
take on lesbian life and the adventure of living will have
you laughing out loud throughout. I had a chance to see her
in Washington, D.C. on April 19, 2002 and she is even more
funny in person. Do not miss out on this huge talent!! For
