Documentaries

There have actually been a number of really good documentaries made about lesbians and the Gay Rights Movement. Below are just a few that we could think of. Xena will be adding many more to this list.

"Before Stonewall" LogoBefore Stonewall - (1984) - A wonderful documentary about the the events leading up to the Stonewall riot in 1969. Using archival film, movie clips and personal recollections, this film looks at the way gays and lesbians were treated by society and the police and what lead up to people deciding they had enough. (X)

"The Celluloid Closet" logoThe Celluloid Closet - (1995) - An extensive look at how homosexuals have been portrayed in Hollywood from the silent film era to the present. This shows both the positive and negative way that gays and lesbians were viewed and often, first shown to audiences. Many of the actors who played the characters mentioned are interviewed, which adds a great deal of history to this documentary. Visit The Official Website. (X)

"Forbidden Love: The Unashamed Stories of Lesbian Love" logoForbidden Love: The Unashamed Stories of Lesbian Love - (1992) - Wonderfully documented film about what life was like for lesbians in the 1940's through 1960's. Learn about what the pioneer's of the gay rights movement went through. By interviewing women who were part of this time in history, you get a real personal look at what dating, finding bars, facing arrest during police raids, defining the etiquette of butch and femme roles and discovering the pulp fiction of the day were like. After watching this documentary, you get a greater appreciation of how much easier it is to be a lesbian now. (X)
