Q. How do I get my web site linked from DC Dykes.com?
A. Well, it depends on what type of web site you have. We select links to other websites based on what type of service it provides. We don't presume to know about every site out there though, so please feel free to e-mail us at dcdykes@dcdykes.com with the following information:

  1. Your web site name.
  2. The URL (web address).
  3. A brief description of what the web site is for.
  4. Where you feel it should be linked from. This just helps us know where to put the web site
  5. A Contact E-mail address (If we post the link to your site, we will e-mail you and let you know.)

Q. How do I get an event listed in your "Metro Happenings" page?
A. Just drop us an e-mail at events@dcdykes.com and let us know the following:

  1. The name of the event.
  2. The date(s).
  3. The location of the event. (This does not have to be the exact address, but we need to know if it's in Maryland, Virginia or Washington DC.)
  4. Contact information. This can be an e-mail address, web site address or phone number. Just some way for people to get more information.
  5. Any other information you would like listed along with the event.

Q. I saw a movie, (or saw a TV show, read a book, heard a CD) that wasn't listed in your entertainment section and would like to add my 2¢. Do you accept outside comments?
A. Of course. Just use the Online Contact Form or e-mail it to dcdykes@dcdykes.com. Please give us the name you want listed with the review. It doesn't have to be your real name. Just make sure that it is your own comments. We can't post any reviews or stories that were written by anyone else.

5.

Q. How much does it cost to advertise on www.dcdykes.com?
A. Actually, we don't accept "advertising" banners or links. This site is meant to be a resource for other lesbians living in the DC Metro area. We are only posting links to organizations, business, etc. that we feel are a help to the community. Nobody pays to be listed on this site. If you are part of an organization or business that you feel should be listed, please read question 1 and just follow those steps.

6.

Q. Why do we go by the names Xena and Gabrielle?
A. Well, we didn't know each other when "Xena" first came on the air, but we met because of it, in a round-about-way (long story). When we started this site, we decided to use names that would be fun, tell a little about ourselves (you can learn something based on who is who) and help people visiting this site know who wrote what. It seemed better then using DCDyke1 and DCDyke2. You can read more in our Who Are We section.

7.

Q. How long does it take to get an event listed?
A. Usually, we can add the link within 24 hours of finding out about it. If you look at the What's New page, you can see that we try and update this site once a day. We often take the weekends off and if an event is e-mailed to us on a Friday or Saturday, it may not go up until Monday. Also, we usually note on the What's New page if we are going away for a few days.

Q. I found a broken link on your site.
A.
We try and check out the sites we have linked from this site at least once a month. It is possible to miss one. If you find a broken link, please drop us an e-mail or use the online Contact Form and let us know what link is not working.

9.

Q. Why didn't you list a specific event? (question reworded)
A.
We either didn't know about it or didn't feel it was a lesbian related event. We try to list all of the events we learn about that are lesbian related. Until the recent article about this site in the Washington Blade, close to 95% of the events listed were events we found out about through visiting other sites, reading publications, etc. Now we are starting to get a lot more visitors contacting us with information. We hope to be able to provide many more events in the future. The sooner we learn about an event, the sooner we can bring that information to you.

Q. Why do you use the term "dyke"? Isn't that a negative way to describe lesbians?
A.
There are two reasons we use the term "dyke" in our name. First, we use the term "dyke" as an empowering term. For years, calling someone a dyke was a bad word. The community stated taking the name back years ago and by calling ourselves dykes, we take the negative use of the word away from other people. Second, we felt that dcdykes.com was an easy to remember URL.

NewQ. If you don't accept advertising, who pays for this site?
A.
We both pay all of the cost involved with this site. We did not want to start charging people to advertise because then we would not be able to provide all of the information that we feel is important to the community. We will list all sites that offer resources, support, social, etc. to lesbians in the DC area.

NewQ. Why hasn't this site been updated recently?
A.
There are a number of reasons. The primary one being time. After Christmas, both of us got very busy with work and personal issues. I (Xena) got extremely busy with work and family matters. While Gabrielle was able to get e-mail and forward messages to me to post, I was only able to get my mail once every two weeks or so. By that time, many of the events we had been notified about had past.

As things are calming down, we have been trying to find easy ways to update this site. We are making attempts to notify organizations out there to please send us events as soon as they are confirmed. We currently receive many events a few days before an event is going to take place and it just has not given us that much time since we are not updating every day.
