The Hippo

Unlike Coconuts, the Hippo is a gay male bar that only has a "Ladies Tea Dance" on the first Sunday of every month. And unlike Coconuts, the Hippo is a very large and very clean bar/club.

If you're willing to trek out to Baltimore on a Sunday, I recommend going to the Ladies Tea Dance. But if you can't make it out on a Sunday, the club is actually worthwhile on other days. Sure, there might not be a lot of lesbians on an average night, but it has a good mix of gay and straight men and women of various races on any given night. In other words, it's a diverse club.

True to its gay boy roots, the music at the Hippo is mainly house music and is very up-to-date. And true to its Baltimore roots, there is only a $3 cover charge, and drinks are about $5. If you're lucky, you'll catch someone offering Jell-O shots for $1 apiece.

Did I mention how large and clean The Hippo is? It has an extensive dance floor, with dancing plat-forms included for you brave souls. There is a walkway surrounding the dance floor so you can watch others dance, and maybe scope out someone who strikes your fancy.

In a completely separate room there is a bar with four pool tables for those who don't feel like dancing. The music in the bar room is very loud though, making it difficult to have a conversation with anyone.
