Drag King Shows

The D.C. Drag King shows are, for a lack of a better term, in a class by themselves. Held on the first Wednesday of every month at Chaos, the shows will definitely shock you but most of all amuse you; that is, if you have an open mind.

Don’t know what exactly a “drag king” is? Think of a drag queen show, then reverse it. Women can’t do quite as much to make themselves look like men, but the kings give it their best by putting on facial hair, strapping their breasts and of course, donning a dildo large enough to be seen through their pants.

The performances range from scantily-clad S/M kings lip-synching to a heavy-metal tune, to a solo performer wearing a suit and lip-synching a love song to the audience. Most performers are good, but some could use more practice learning the lyrics to the songs they’re singing.

While many of the performances are truly original and/or shocking, the number of simulated “blow-jobs” and (pardon my French) butt-fucking can be a tad excessive. In fact, some of the best performances are the ones that are straightforward but well-rehearsed.

Since Chaos is a good place to go anyway on Wednesday nights, I recommend checking out a drag king show and sticking around for dancing afterwards. If nothing else, you’ll be able to say you’ve been to a drag king show. How many people can say that?
