Coconuts, the staple lesbian bar in Baltimore, appears to be a mixed bag. I went once and it was filled with all women over 50. I went another time and it had a nice group of people that widely ranged in age and race. One friend told me that the club is mainly for older rugged women, another said it is where all the sorority girls hang out.

So you never know what you'll get there. In general, the atmosphere at Coconuts reminds me of the Phase in D.C.-it is a small bar/club, and the people all seem to be friendly. Unlike the Phase however, the music played at Coconuts is current and it club is more racially mixed.

One great thing about Baltimore bars are the prices, which are significantly cheaper than D.C. bars. The cover for Coconuts is a whole $3, and many drinks (even mixed drinks) are the same price. Unfortu-nately, you get what you pay for with the drinks; the liquor in them is low-quality.

So as you can see, it's a little hard to say whether Coconuts is a "good" bar or not. I recommend trying it out once if you're in Baltimore, if nothing else because it's good to support the few clubs designated to lesbians all the time, and not just once a week.
